Introduction
Patriot Yu Gwan-sun was born in Yongdu-ri, Byeongcheon-myeon, Cheonan-si, in 1902. When the March 1, 1919, Independence Movement started, she returned home to Cheonan from Seoul, where she studied at the Ewha School. She led the Independence Manse Movement in the Aunae marketplace on April 1, consequently, being arrested.
Even though she was imprisoned in Seodaemun Prison, she shouted “Manse!(Long live Korea!)” for the independence of her country. Each time the prison guards would drag her out to torture her, she eventually died on September 28, 1920, of the aftereffects of the torture.
In order to pass on the patriotic spirit of Yu, her memorial shrine was erected in 1972, and a memorial ceremony honoring the independence activist has been held every year on the anniversary of her death. Situated near the site are the beacon fire site and tower she used to announce the uprising, as well as her former home and Maebong Church, which she attended. Also, the annual Signal Fire Festival is held on the last day of February on this site.
